How often do users play?

№ 140 · Session frequency distribution

Definition

MetricSessions per active user per day

Unitsessions per daily active user per day

Histogram of sessions per user per week. Usually bimodal (casuals and core users). Build from session event logs. The right peak is where retention and revenue live. Example: 38% users 1-2 sessions/week, 22% 3-7, 12% 8+ sessions (the power users).

Mobile games pooled across 16 genres and 9 regions, 2024 calendar year for the session count figures (GameAnalytics), with genre and regional splits in the category table. Sessions per daily active user per day, not sessions per install and not sessions on install day. · The percentile framing is inferred. GameAnalytics publishes an average of about 4 sessions per day and a midcore figure of 6 to 7, not a full distribution, so the top30 and bottom30 bands are calibration rather than measurement. There is a live definitional conflict on the companion metric that will corrupt any chart mixing the two: GameAnalytics puts median session length at 5 to 6 minutes while Adjust reports session lengths of 25 to 44 minutes by genre. The two are almost certainly measuring different things, with the Adjust figure behaving like daily time spent per user rather than duration of a single session. Adjust's day-zero session count of 1.65 is a third metric again and applies only to install day. Pick one definition, state it on the chart, and do not benchmark across the others.

When it looks bad

The distribution is bimodal, with a tall spike at exactly one session per day and a thin tail, rather than a body sitting at three to five, so the average is being held up by a small habitual group while most actives open the game once and leave.

Mean of 3.9 sessions per day with 61% of actives at exactly one session, 9% above six, and almost nobody in between.

What to do about it

  • Report the median and the shape of the histogram rather than the mean. A mean of four produced by a one-session mode plus a heavy tail is a different game from a mean of four with a body at three to five, and only the second one has a working habit loop.
  • Add a second daily return reason at a different time of day aimed specifically at the one-session group. Midcore titles reach 6 to 7 sessions per day (GameAnalytics) mostly through timed systems such as energy regeneration, alliance actions and refreshing objectives, not through longer sessions.
  • Set frequency targets by region rather than globally. Sessions per day run from 3.67 in North America to 5.45 in Africa (GameAnalytics), so a single global target reads as failure in exactly the market that monetises best and as success in the one that does not.
  • Use the event calendar as the frequency instrument. Top casual titles now carry 80 to 100 monthly event touchpoints and midcore 20 to 40 (Game Growth Advisor), and overlapping short cycles move the one-session group more reliably than adding content depth does.
