| approaching network programs: Visa flags excessive at 1.5% dispute ratio from April 2026 (2.2% prior); Mastercard monitoring from 100 monthly chargebacks or 1.5%; marketplace dispute volumes rose 45% YoY in the Sift network | network average chargeback rate 0.17-0.26% of transactions across 2025 (Sift network, rising through the year); card-not-present e-commerce commonly cited at 0.6-1.0%; vertical range approx 0.12-1.02% | dispute rate at or below approx 0.1% of transactions with representment discipline; well inside network thresholds with headroom for seasonal spikes |
global card-network merchant data 2025-2026, dispute rate defined as chargebacks divided by transactions in the period; refunds tracked separately since proactive refunds are a prevention lever that suppresses disputes · Sources disagree because populations differ: the Sift network mean (0.17-0.26%) covers managed merchants, while the 0.6-1.0% CNP figure describes unmanaged e-commerce; both are real. Merchants attribute approx 44% of disputes to friendly or first-party fraud, likely understated. Marketplaces carry two-sided risk: seller fraud and buyer fraud need separate lines.
| Category | Bottom 30% | Median | Top 30% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed-merchant networks (Sift population) | above 0.5% and rising | 0.17-0.26% (2025) | below approx 0.1% |
| Card-not-present e-commerce (unmanaged population) | above 1.0%, inside monitoring-program range | 0.6-1.0% | below 0.5% |
When it looks bad
The dispute-rate line trends up for three consecutive months while the refund line is flat, meaning problems are escaping to the bank instead of being resolved in-platform; spikes cluster around specific sellers, categories or promo periods.
Dispute rate climbs 0.4% to 0.9% over a quarter; 60% of new disputes trace to 12 sellers in one category; at the current slope the platform crosses the 1.5% Visa threshold in two quarters.
What to do about it
- Resolve before the bank does: order-status transparency, self-serve refunds under a value threshold, and dispute alerts (network inquiry-to-refund flows) so complaints convert to refunds, which cost the refund, instead of chargebacks, which cost approx $4.61 per $1 disputed.
- Run seller-level defect scorecards with economic consequences: dispute and refund costs charged back to causing sellers above a defect threshold, ranking suppression, and offboarding at the tail; marketplace dispute growth concentrates in identifiable supply.
- Fight the right disputes: represent non-fraud reason codes with compelling evidence, and use post-purchase behavioral signals for first-party fraud, which merchants already attribute to approx 44% of volume.
- Set a hard internal ceiling at half the binding network threshold (0.75% against the 1.5% Visa line) with automatic promo and seller-onboarding brakes when any market breaches it.
