How much revenue per user?

№ 187 · Revenue per active user

Definition

MetricRevenue per active user

UnitUSD of revenue per active user per month

Single line of revenue divided by MAU over time. Pull revenue and MAU monthly. Watch for divergence between user growth and revenue growth (product not monetizing well enough). Rising trend = monetization improving without sacrificing users. Example: $24/MAU Q1, $32/MAU Q4 (33% improvement).

MAU
Monthly active users. Unique users performing a qualifying action in a rolling 30 days.

B2B SaaS: under $10 per paying account per month, where only 2.7% of businesses hold net revenue retention above 100%. Consumer subscription apps: under $0.15 revenue per install by day 60, where paid acquisition rarely clears cost per install.B2B SaaS: roughly $25 to $50 per paying account per month, the boundary ChartMogul uses to separate B2C-shaped from B2B-shaped businesses. Consumer subscription apps: about $0.31 revenue per install by day 60.B2B SaaS: above roughly $250 per paying account per month, the band where ChartMogul finds net negative churn becomes normal rather than exceptional. Consumer subscription apps: above $0.60 revenue per install by day 60, which is where AI apps and Health and Fitness sit.

Two separate populations, because no publisher reports revenue per active user on a common denominator. B2B SaaS figures are ARPA, monthly recurring revenue divided by paying accounts, from ChartMogul's panel of 2,500+ subscription businesses, 2023 to 2025. Consumer app figures are revenue per install measured at day 60 from RevenueCat, 115,000+ apps and $16B of tracked revenue, 2025 to 2026 data. · The denominator is the whole problem. ChartMogul divides by paying accounts, RevenueCat divides by installs, and a product team tracking monthly actives divides by a base that includes free users. The three numbers are not comparable and cannot be converted without your own free-to-paid ratio. Neither publisher releases a clean percentile curve for this metric, so the top30 and bottom30 above are read off published band membership rather than a distribution, which is why confidence is low. A B2B account with 12 seats at $250 per month is roughly $21 per active user, so the account-level number overstates the per-user number by whatever your seats-per-account figure is.

Category split omitted: No two independent Tier 1 or Tier 2 publishers report revenue per active user on the same category split; ChartMogul divides by paying accounts and RevenueCat divides by installs, so any combined table would compare different denominators.

When it looks bad

The revenue-per-active-user line is flat or drifting down while the active-user line climbs, so total revenue only grows at the speed of the user base and each new cohort monetizes worse than the one before it.

Monthly actives up 38% across four quarters, revenue per active user down from $41 to $29, so revenue grew 2% while support and hosting cost grew with the head count of users.

What to do about it

  • Move the price off a flat per-seat fee onto a value metric that grows with usage, so revenue per user rises without a renegotiation. ChartMogul's outlier cohort raised ARPA 82% on the path from $1M to $20M ARR against 63% for everyone else, and 72% of outliers moved ARPA by more than 10%.
  • Raise the entry price rather than adding features to justify the existing one. RevenueCat's high-priced cohort reached $62.19 realized LTV per payer in Year 1 against $10.69 for the low-priced cohort, roughly 6x on the same categories.
  • Split the chart by cohort and by plan before acting on the blended line. A falling blended number with rising per-cohort numbers means mix shift from acquisition, which is a channel problem, not a pricing problem.
  • Move the paywall off the signup step and onto the first value moment. RevenueCat reports median day 35 conversion of 2.6% in North America against 10.4% at the 90th percentile, so the spread inside one region is roughly 4x and is set by paywall placement rather than price.
