How many viewers do we serve per paid account?

№ 087 · Household / family share distribution

01

Definition

MetricViewers served per paid account; share of accounts used outside the paying household

Unitviewers per paying account; % of accounts shared or borrowed

Histogram of devices or profiles per account. Long tail means revenue dilution from password sharing. Build from device-login events grouped per account. Informs household plan pricing or sharing crackdowns. Example: 38% accounts 1 profile, 34% 2 profiles, 18% 3-4, 10% 5+ (password sharers).

Benchmarks

Bottom 30%MedianTop 30%
30%+ of accounts shared or borrowed; pre-crackdown Netflix estimated 100M+ borrower households against 222M paid, about 43% of the baseAround 20-25% of DTC video services used in more than one household; roughly 2-3 viewers served per paid account (Netflix: ~700M viewers on 301.6M memberships in early 2025)Under 10-15% of accounts used outside the paying household, with in-household multi-profile use high (that is reach, not leakage)

US direct-to-consumer video services, 2022-2024 consumer surveys (Leichtman Research Group, n=2,546 households in 2024) plus Netflix company estimates. Sharing measured as use outside the paying household. · Some sharing is healthy: it expands reach and seeds future subscribers, and in-household profiles are the product working as designed. The benchmark tracks external sharing only. Post paid-sharing enforcement, US Netflix borrowing fell from 15% (2022) to 10% (2024) per LRG, showing the distribution is movable. Survey-based shares and company panel estimates use different denominators; do not average them.

Category split omitted: Borrowing splits by age band and service come from a single surveyor (LRG); company estimates cover one operator each, so no aligned two-source split exists.

03

When it looks bad

A heavy right tail of accounts active in 3+ distinct households, with peak concurrent streams and profile counts growing while paid subscriber growth is flat.

28% of accounts showing activity in two or more geolocated households, monetizing an estimated 1.4 viewers out of 3.2 served per account.

What to do about it

  • Launch a paid-sharing or extra-member SKU before hard enforcement; Netflix's $7.99 extra-member rollout converted borrowers at scale and contributed to 41M net adds in 2024, and US borrowing fell from 15% to 10% (LRG)
  • Pair household verification with a graceful profile-transfer path so borrowers keep their watch history when converting, turning enforcement into acquisition rather than churn
  • Tie concurrent-stream and profile counts to the tier ladder so heavy multi-household usage has a legitimate paid upgrade path instead of a workaround
  • For family products, legitimize in-household multi-profile use explicitly (per-child profiles, grandparent access windows) while capping simultaneous external locations, since in-home breadth drives retention rather than leakage
