Of new signups, how many fund their account by day N?
№ 110 · Account funded rate
Definition
MetricShare of new signups that fund the account by day N
Unit% of signups funded by day 1, 7 and 30
Funnel from signup to KYC complete to linked-bank to funded-account. Each step's drop tells you where to fix. Build from event data filtered by stage. Funded rate is the only step that actually starts revenue. Example: 100 signups, 78 KYC, 56 linked, 38 funded (38% to fund).
- KYC
- Know your customer. Identity verification required before onboarding. Measured as pass rate and time to clear.

| Bottom 30% | Median | Top 30% |
|---|---|---|
| Below 20% funded by day 30, which is also roughly where install-based cohorts land once app-store signups are counted in the denominator | 30% to 45% of completed signups funded by day 30 | 55% or more of completed signups funded by day 30, and above 35% by day 7 |
Consumer fintech and neobank account opening, funded meaning first deposit or first funded transaction. European and US digital account opening 2022 to 2026. Denominator is completed signups, not application starts and not app installs. · The denominator decides the number, and the three common denominators give three different charts. Against application starts, roughly 68% of European consumers abandon before completing, so a 40% funded rate on completed signups is about 13% on starts. Against app installs, Business of Apps puts full activation by day 30 at about 14% of finance app users, which is the same funnel measured from further upstream. The activation benchmarks by model (30 to 60% for neobank first-funded account, 50 to 80% for payments first transaction, 25 to 50% for wealth-tech first funded portfolio) come from a compiled Tier 3 source without a disclosed sample and should be treated as directional. Signicat's abandonment series runs from 2016 to the 2022 wave, so the 68% figure is not current-year data and is flagged accordingly.
Category split omitted: Funded rate by fintech sub-model is published only by compiled Tier 3 sources without disclosed samples, so no split meets the two-independent-source bar.
When it looks bad
The funding curve is almost entirely flat after day 1, so whatever share of the cohort funds immediately is the whole result and the days 2 to 30 segment adds a percentage point or two, meaning there is no recovery mechanism for anyone who hesitates.
Day 1 funded is 22%, day 7 is 24%, day 30 is 25%. Three quarters of every acquired signup never funds, and at a USD 90 blended CAC the real cost per funded account is USD 360.
What to do about it
- Replace micro-deposit verification with instant account verification. Onboarding drop-off runs as high as 49% with micro-deposits against as low as 1% with instant account verification, which is the single largest documented step change available in this funnel (MX with Apiture).
- Cut time to completion below the abandonment threshold and measure it as a primary metric. Average time before abandonment fell from 26 minutes in 2020 to under 19 minutes, so every screen removed is worth more each year than it was the year before (Signicat Battle to Onboard, via Lorikeet).
- Deep-link the web-to-app handoff rather than dropping users on a generic home screen. Web-to-app drives 41.8% of owned media conversions in Western European finance apps, and a user who has to restart the application after install is a funded account that was paid for and then discarded (AppsFlyer with Sensor Tower, 2026).
- Restate CAC on a per-funded-account basis in every reporting pack. A USD 40 signup CAC becomes USD 80 to 120 per funded customer once funnel failure is included, and teams optimising against the signup number will keep buying traffic that never funds (Databrain fintech KPI benchmarks, 2026).
