How long after free signup do converting customers actually pay?

№ 024 · Time-to-paid distribution

01

Definition

MetricDays from free signup to first payment among converting users

Unitdays (distribution: median, P75, tail)

Histogram of days from free signup to first payment. Right-skewed for slow value-reveal products. Build by joining signup events to first-payment events, computing day delta per converter, bucketing. The mode tells you the natural value-realization window. Example: 22% convert in first 7 days, 35% between days 8-30, long tail.

Fat tail: large share of conversions at or after trial expiry only, or freemium conversions spread flat past month 6, both signals that payment happens by deadline or accident rather than by value30-day trials: median conversion around day 8-10; 14-day trials convert earlier with urgency built in; freemium: converting users typically pay between month 3 and month 6Tight distribution: trial converters concentrated inside the trial window with median well before expiry (day 8-10 on a 30-day trial); freemium converters compressing toward months 1-3

B2B SaaS self-serve funnels, 2024-2026; per-model timing since trials and freemium have structurally different clocks · Fewer than 5 credible Tier 1-2 sources publish time-to-paid distributions; the figures here lean on Tier 3 aggregation plus ChartMogul billing-timing data, so confidence is low and stated. The one well-evidenced adjacent timing fact: monthly-to-annual upgrades peak in months 2-4 (ChartMogul), a useful proxy for when self-serve willingness to commit peaks.

Category split omitted: Time-to-paid distributions by model or vertical are not published by two independent Tier 1-2 sources; only aggregator timing points exist.

When it looks bad

A spike at the deadline and emptiness before it: the histogram shows almost no conversions in the first two weeks, then a wall at trial expiry, meaning users pay to avoid losing access rather than because value landed early.

On a 30-day trial, 8% of conversions happen by day 14 and 71% on days 28-31. Deadline-driven converters are weakly activated; the reported conversion rate flatters a funnel that will churn them within two quarters.

What to do about it

  • Shorten the trial to compress the distribution: if the median converter on a 30-day trial pays around day 8-10, a 14-day trial with an extension option keeps the converters and removes three weeks of drift for everyone else.
  • Trigger the paywall on milestones, not days: prompt upgrade at the activation event or usage threshold; deadline-only conversion produces the bad histogram above and worse retention (early converters showed ~40% lower 12-month churn in reported data).
  • Mine the tail: freemium users converting in months 3-6 are normal, so build a month-2 to month-4 lifecycle push aligned with the window where ChartMogul shows commitment willingness peaks.
  • Segment time-to-paid by persona; a bimodal histogram is often two personas (an evaluator who buys fast, a tinkerer who needs months), each deserving its own sequence rather than one blended nurture.
